AOC and Mayor Mamdani Caught Laughing at Ground Zero While Families Read the Names of Their Dead

The TV feed cut from a sobbing family member reading her father's name to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez grinning and laughing together at the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan. The split screen lasted only seconds. It was more than enough.

Over 110,000 victims' family members had signed a petition urging Mamdani not to attend the ceremony at all.

The 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 was supposed to be about the people who never came home. For one minute and twenty seconds of footage now circulating across every corner of the internet, it became about two politicians who apparently couldn't maintain a straight face while standing on a mass grave. The annual reading of the names — every single person murdered that morning, spoken aloud by their own family members — was underway when cameras caught Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez in what looked unmistakably like a casual, laughing exchange.

Rep. Wesley Hunt, Republican of Texas, didn't mince it. "As the names of Americans murdered on September 11th are read aloud at Ground Zero, AOC and Mamdani are laughing and smiling together," Hunt wrote. "Ground Zero is sacred ground." He added: "September 11 is not a photo op, it is not a networking event."

NYC Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, a Republican representing Brighton Beach, went further. "After thousands of families of victims of terror beg Mamdani not to show up, he stands there and laughs while families weep," Vernikov wrote. "This is NYC's Mayor."

Rep. Randy Fine, Republican of Florida, kept it short: "They do not mourn this country, they mock it. Have some damn respect." Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain, had a question of her own for the pair: "Why the f--- are these two laughing?"

The backlash was immediate and bipartisan in its disgust, though the defense operation spun up just as fast. Michael Ragusa, identified as the former head of Rudy Giuliani's security detail, claimed he was standing next to them the entire time and that "the videos of them laughing are not true." He said the camera caught Ocasio-Cortez greeting Mamdani hello, and that "multiple other politicians were laughing and joking behind me. Republicans and Democrats."

The "other people did it too" defense is a fascinating choice when you're already the two politicians that 110,000 grieving family members didn't want there in the first place. The petition existed because of Mamdani's record, not because of a camera angle. The families weren't worried about a brief greeting. They were worried about exactly what they got — a mayor who treats their sacred ground like a meet-and-greet.

Photographs from elsewhere in the ceremony show Mamdani standing between New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and New York First Gentleman William Hochul Jr., looking appropriately solemn. So he can do it. He just apparently couldn't sustain it for the duration of a ceremony honoring nearly three thousand dead Americans.

The families asked him not to come. He came anyway. And the one clip the entire country will remember from the 25th anniversary isn't a name being read or a flag being lowered. It's two elected officials who looked like they were at a cocktail party while the rest of the country wept.
