Actress Camryn Manheim Publicly Mourns That Her Son Turned Out Straight

Camryn Manheim took the stage at the Human Rights Campaign 2026 National Dinner this weekend to present actress Marcia Gay Harden with the Ally for Equity Award. What followed was not a gracious tribute to a colleague but a profanity-laced confession that her 25-year-old son Milo's heterosexuality is, apparently, the great disappointment of her life.

"I always wanted a gay son. I did," Manheim told the black-tie crowd. "I love that relationship between gay sons and their mothers."

She wasn't joking. Or rather, she was joking the way someone jokes when they mean every word and want applause for saying it out loud. Manheim went on to catalog the evidence she'd assembled over the years that Milo was destined to be gay — photographs of him in drag and high heels, his encyclopedic knowledge of musicals, his career as an actor. She'd built the case. She was ready to be, in her words, "the picket sign-holding mom who would beat the s* out of somebody for her kid."

Then came the twist that, in Manheim's telling, functions as the tragedy of her parenting story.

"I mean, truly, I thought I had this f*ing thing locked up," she said. "But no, nooooooo. He's the only straight guy in his entire musical theater company."

The audience laughed. Manheim was just getting started. When she pivoted to Harden — whose own son has come out — she dropped any pretense of subtlety. "Oh my God," she told Harden from the podium. "You are so f*ing lucky."

Lucky. Because Harden's son is gay and hers isn't.

Milo is 25 years old. His biological father is Jeffrey Brezovar, a gay friend of Manheim's. She also name-checked Aaron Walton, whom she described as Milo's "fairy godfather." She referenced Harden's son receiving red patent leather thigh-high boots as though this were a heartwarming anecdote rather than a detail most parents would process quietly. Every piece of the speech was designed to signal one thing: in Manheim's world, a straight son is the consolation prize.

This wasn't a private moment caught on a hot mic. This was a prepared speech at a formal dinner, delivered to a room full of people who nodded along. Nobody flinched. Nobody in that ballroom paused to consider what it sounds like when a mother publicly announces that her adult child's sexual orientation is a personal letdown — because the orientation in question was the default one.

Imagine reversing the variables. A mother takes a stage and announces she "always wanted a straight son" and expresses visible disappointment that he turned out gay. The speech wouldn't end. Security would. Every entertainment outlet in the country would run the clip under the word "hateful" for a week. The actress would be dropped by her agency before the valet brought the car around.

But Manheim said it about a straight kid, so it's comedy. It's allyship. It's a fun anecdote at an awards dinner.

The HRC National Dinner is not a fringe event. It's the marquee fundraiser for the largest LGBTQ advocacy organization in the country. The Ally for Equity Award is supposed to honor people who support dignity and acceptance. Manheim was the one chosen to present it.

She used the platform to tell a room full of adults that her son's identity was a disappointment, and the room clapped.
