Thirty-nine parts per trillion. That's how much mifepristone — the active compound in the chemical abortion pill — was detected in the drinking water of three American cities. Austin, Texas. Blacksburg, Virginia. Carbondale, Illinois. If you live in one of those places, you've possibly been consuming trace amounts of an anti-progesterone drug every time you filled a glass from the tap.
A peer-reviewed study published July 20 in the journal Issues in Law and Medicine found mifepristone concentrations of 0.041 micrograms per liter in environmental water samples across nine sampling classes. The study was authored by Dr. Elise Rose, affiliated with the Charlotte Lozier Institute, and Dr. Michael Varveris, and funded by Charitable Allies, Inc. The testing effort was inspired by Students for Life of America, which had been pushing for years to get someone — anyone — to actually check whether the most widely distributed abortion drug in American history was showing up where it shouldn't.
Turns out it was.
John Stemberger, President of Liberty Counsel Action, called the findings a wake-up call. "This ground-breaking study shows that chemical abortion drugs are present in U.S. drinking water," Stemberger said. "This pioneering testing effort, inspired by Students for Life of America, is a critical step in advocating for the EPA to add mifepristone to its contaminant list."
That last part is worth sitting with. The agency that regulates your tap water does not track, monitor, or limit the presence of a synthetic anti-progesterone compound that was specifically designed to terminate pregnancies. The FDA approved the drug. The EPA doesn't screen for it. And the gap between those two agencies is where your drinking water lives.
Medication abortions now account for 63 percent of all abortions performed in the United States. The two-drug regimen — mifepristone followed by misoprostol — is prescribed by mail, taken at home, and flushed into municipal water systems with zero pharmaceutical take-back infrastructure in place. The supply has exploded. The waste stream followed.
The environmental left, which spent the better part of a decade screaming about microplastics in bottled water and PFAS in rural wells, has been conspicuously quiet. These are the same advocacy groups that demanded the EPA regulate every detectable chemical compound in groundwater — until the compound in question turned out to be linked to abortion access. Then suddenly the precautionary principle took a vacation.
Endocrine disruptors are supposed to be the thing that unites left and right. Chemicals that interfere with hormonal function — particularly progesterone — have documented effects on fertility, fetal development, and reproductive health. Anti-progesterone compounds don't stop being anti-progesterone compounds because they came from a politically protected pill.
The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine has been sounding this alarm in federal court for years, arguing that the FDA's accelerated approval process for mifepristone skipped standard environmental review. That case was largely treated as an anti-abortion legal strategy. The water sampling data suggests it was also an environmental one.
The "safe and effective" talking point was always about the woman taking the pill. Nobody bothered to ask whether it was safe and effective for everyone downstream.
