Democrats Are Crossing Party Lines to Back a Republican in Michigan — And Their Own Candidate Did It to Them

A lifelong Democrat from West Bloomfield, Michigan — identified only as Chelsea — sat down with Fox News and said something that should terrify every strategist at the DNC: "I'm a lifelong Democrat. I voted for Obama. I voted for Hillary. I voted for Biden."

She's voting for Republican Mike Rogers to be her state's next Senator.

Fox News polling from August 6 through August 10 shows Rogers, a former congressman and former FBI agent, holding a 4-point edge over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed in what was supposed to be a locked-down blue Senate seat. An AARP poll confirmed the race is margin-of-error close. Rogers is pulling 96% of Republican voters — 99% among MAGA Republicans, 89% among non-MAGA Republicans. El-Sayed has 91% of Democrats, but among non-DSA Democrats and independents, that number craters to 69%.

That 69% is where this race gets decided. And it's where El-Sayed's problems start looking terminal.

El-Sayed, the former Wayne County Health Department director, won the Democratic primary on August 5 with the backing of Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He supports Medicare-for-all. He wants to abolish ICE. He has called Israel's actions in Gaza "genocide." If elected, he'd become the nation's first Muslim senator.

That résumé plays well with the Democratic Socialists of America — 98% of DSA-aligned voters back him. It plays considerably less well with the Jewish voters, suburban moderates, and union Democrats who actually decide Michigan elections.

The cracks showed publicly in April 2026 at the Michigan state Democratic Party convention, where the hostility toward Israel became so open that Rep. Haley Stevens, the more moderate primary candidate, was booed. Stevens lost the primary, and the voters who backed her are now shopping.

Rogers has been direct about where they can shop. "To Democrat voters who feel their nominee doesn't represent them and their values, all hope is not lost," Rogers said. "You have a home with us."

Rabbi Asher Lopatin of Huntington Woods, Michigan, told Fox News he's backing Rogers despite deep reservations about the current administration. "I do have a lot of issues with a lot of policies of the Trump administration," Lopatin said. He's voting Rogers anyway. When a rabbi who disagrees with Trump on policy still can't stomach the Democratic nominee, the party has a problem that no amount of canvassing fixes.

El-Sayed campaign spokesperson Cole Wozniak responded with the standard playbook line: "Mike Rogers will put Donald Trump ahead of Michigan every single time." Which is an interesting argument to make to voters who are already telling you they'd rather have Trump's party than yours.

El-Sayed ran for governor in 2018 and lost the Democratic primary. The party gave him another shot. He used it to run so far left that his own voters started crossing the aisle in a state Democrats need to hold.

The Medicare-for-all crowd, the abolish-ICE crowd, and the convention delegates who booed a Jewish congresswoman — they got their nominee. Now Rogers is polling ahead, lifelong Democrats are doing Fox News interviews about switching sides, and the path to 50 seats runs through a state where the Democratic brand just caught fire.

Sometimes the opposition doesn't beat you. Sometimes you beat yourself, and the opposition just has to stand there with the door open.
